Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) commanded attention with her stunning beauty, sparkling red hair, and her passionate portrayals of spirited characters. She was an imposing actress and an ebullient woman. It was whether it was being saved from the hands of Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), falling in love in the dark coal skies with Walter Pidgeon in How Green Was My Valley (How Green Was My Valley 1941) or learning about the miracle of life from Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street (Miracle on 34th Street 1947) or battling wits against John Wayne in The Quiet Man (The Quiet Man, 1952) Maureen O'Hara, the book-length biographical account of the famed screen actor who was dubbed by a lot of people as "the queen of technicolor" it is the first. The book follows the actress through her early years in Dublin until her peak of fame in Hollywood film reviewer Aubrey Malone draws on new data from the Irish Film Institute production notes in films as well as details from historical film journals newspapers and fan magazines. Malone explores her connection and relationship with John Wayne, and the connection she enjoyed and John Ford. He also examines the debate about whether or not the actress was antifeminist. Although she was a symbol of the golden age of cinema, O'Hara's penchant for privacy and tendency to make public declarations which contradicted her own personal beliefs have made her an enigma. The new biography offers us the chance to see the woman who was behind the icon of her time.
